Background:

Three hundred Baltimore youth participating in the Youth Opportunity (YO!) Movement will be attending a day-long conference featuring self-empowerment and culminating with the creation of personal plans for success.

The Conference will feature keynote speaker Jeff Johnson, National Director of the Youth, College and Young Adult Division of the NAACP. Johnson's remarks will encourage youth to move toward self-determination-beyond peer or cultural pressure.

YO! Baltimore Movement's goal is to increase employment and high school completion rates, as well as improve the long-term economic well-being of youth in the Empowerment Zone (EZ) communities. The Baltimore City Mayor's Office of Employment Development is of one of 36 recipients of the United State Department of Labor's Youth Opportunity Grants. Baltimore currently has four locations serving EZ out-of-school youth.

This conference is part of the national tour of the "Making It" Movement, which is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of the Hip-Hop generation. It focuses on the importance of education, work and non-violence among inner city youth. In rap keeping it real is frequently used. Unfortunately many youth are buying into the insidious actions and behaviors that threaten their freedom and growth. The "Making It" Movement helps to make it right. The "Making It" tour will also be in New York, Miami, and Washington, D.C. Edward DeJesus of the Youth Development and Research Fund, Inc. and author of The Young Adults' Guide to Making It will also be a featured speaker.

The Conference is limited to YO! members only.

8:30 YO! Members arrive at BCCC, enjoy breakfast and receive a conference packet, including a copy of Making It by Ed DeJesus
9:00 Conference begins with YO! Baltimore Rap with Lamont Munfred and Fred Alston
10:00 Ed introduces the Success Seekers who present the "aspire"concept
10:30 Youth break up and go to eight independent sessions to develop personal "Making It" plans.
10:45 Making It workshop begins
12:15 Lunch break
12:40 Luncheon performance of YO! Cultural Arts Players
1:15 The Source Foundation Awards for 5 Baltimore YO! Members
2:00 Ed introduces Hip Hop artists and they perform and give remarks
3:00 YO! Members receive prizes
